Installation and Adjustment of Gear Couplings

Small specifications of gear couplings, whose shaft holes and shaft extensions are usually clearance fit, have a fixed screw perpendicular to the keyway to fix it. Bigger specification, whose shaft holes and shaft extensions are interference fit, usually need hot charging.

For couplings with fit clearance of shaft hole and shaft extension, check each surface of halve, shaft and key (burrs and bumping are not allowed) and then clean all the parts again. Smear proper amount of sealant at the bottom of the halve keyway, guaranteeing no oil leakage. It is not allowed to heat halves with fit clearance. Tighten the axial fixed bolts when installing halves, shafts and keys.

For couplings with fit interference of shaft hole and shaft extension, check each surface of halve, shaft and key (burrs and bumping are not allowed) and then clean all the parts again. Smear proper amount of sealant at the bottom of the halve keyway, guaranteeing no oil leakage. Since the shaft hole and shaft extension is interference fit, halves need to be heated, but the highest heating temperature cannot exceed 130 ℃. If the heating temperature is over 200℃, the sealing element will be damaged. Use oven, burner, induction heater or oil pool to heat halve. Maintain a constant movement and avoid overheating in some areas when directly heating halve hole.

Note: shut off the start switch and remove the load from the driven device before installing or maintaining the coupling. Don’t work in a flammable environment or near flammable if you use oil pool to heat. The flashing point of oil must be higher than 177℃. Do not put the halves in the bottom of the container directly and place a piece of iron between the bottom of the container and the halve.

The installation steps:
1 Assemble sealing ring, end cover and inner tooth
First of all, turn off the start switch and then remove the load from the driven device. Use non-flammable solvent to wipe all the metal parts and mounting surfaces. Paint grease on the end cover or in internal tooth sealing groove, as well as on the sealing ring. Gently place the seal ring on the end cover or in the internal tooth sealing groove. Put the assembled end cover or inner teeth and the sealing ring on the shaft before outer tooth is assembled.

2 Assemble outer tooth and halves
If it is clearance fit, then it doesn’t need to be heated. If it is interference fit, heat outer tooth according to the previous description. Then respectively install the outer tooth to the corresponding shaft. Generally the outer tooth face is flush with the shaft end unless otherwise specification. Tighten the screws after assembly for clearance fit. Assembly end cover or inner tooth seal on outer tooth, and coat with grease on their surfaces. Then set the assembled end cover or inner tooth seal and seal ring slowly on the sealing matching surface of outer tooth. The assembly methods of halves are the same as that of outer tooth.

3 Assemble other parts
The parts with end face seal groove and the sealing ring need to be coated with a layer of grease. Gently place the seal ring into end face seal groove and then assembly the two half couplings together with bolt, nut and spring. The couplings with brake disc, brake wheel and spring washer are also done in this step.

5 The use, maintenance, preservation of gear coupling
The gear coupling should be lubricated and maintained in good lubrication condition, especially under high speed operation.

The gear coupling should adopt number 2 lithium grease ZL - 4. Change the grease every half year. Monthly check twice and replenish it immediately if finding it is insufficient.

When adding the grease, unscrew the lubricating oil plug hole on the cover, insert the oiling device. Add grease until excess grease overflow from the opposite oil hole.

Note: All oil plugs must be covered and tightened after being refueled.
